Fairfield remembers the allied forces who gave service on D-Day eighty years ago

June 7, 2024

Fairfield residents joined the nation yesterday (6th June 2024) to remember the tens of thousands of allied forces who gave service on D-Day eighty years ago and helped secure the peace we in the UK enjoy today.

In the Community Hall, there were lots of activities for the children organised by the Scout Group. This was followed by a fish and chip supper with a quiz that was closely contested between the WI and Bowls Club with the latter finally being  crowned the champions.

Councillor Tracey Riley (FPC Chair) welcomed everyone to Urban Park reminding everyone that the beacon represented a light in memory of those who took part in the D-Day landings and subsequent liberation of France. She then read the D-Day proclamation

This was followed by Gavin Daffarn reading ‘The Tribute’. Gavin Daffarn served in the Royal Air Force from leaving school until retiring as a Group Captain. His long service in the UK Forces instilled in him a deep regard and respect for his fellow comrades and colleagues, and a recognition of the risk they all dealt with in their military roles.  So memorial events like Remembrance Day and D-Day are of particular significance to Gavin and Penny, his wife.

In a final gesture of homage, Les Pike (91), one of the few residents who remember D-Day as an 11year old child and who served in the forces as a Royal Marine, lit the beacons for Fairfield to signify the light that emerged from the dreadful darkness of war.

The evening ended with Ruth Lowe playing the National Anthem on her cornet.

We thank everyone who helped organise this event and all those who attended to pay their respects to these heroes.

Most importantly though, we thank all those who served their country for their bravery and determination for our freedom. We will always remember them.

Finally, we also thank all those who have served their country since and are serving now.R
